Artist: Anna Pangalou
Anna Pangalou is a vocal and sound installation artist whose work explores the boundaries between classical vocal tradition and experimental sound. Formally trained as a classical singer in Cannes, Vienna, Rome, and Athens, she has received distinctions from institutions such as the Onassis Foundation and the Fulbright Foundation. Over the years, her artistic focus has shifted toward contemporary and experimental music, collaborating with pioneering composers and curators who recognize the unique qualities of her voice. She has performed at renowned festivals and institutions, including documenta 14 and Onassis Stegi, engaging with innovative vocal compositions that challenge conventional performance practices. Her work has been presented across Europe and internationally, spanning concert halls, museums, and interdisciplinary platforms that foreground experimental sound and performance.
Her recent work expands into the realm of soundscapes, acoustic ecology, and spatial perception, integrating voice, breath, and environmental sound into site-specific installations. Central to her practice is an ongoing investigation into the relationship between the human body and its surrounding environment, often using breath as both material and metaphor. Continuing to develop site-specific works, Anna seeks collaboration with artists and thinkers from diverse disciplines, exploring new modes of perception and experience through sound, space, and the human voice. Her projects frequently engage with place as both context and collaborator, positioning sound as a means of attunement to the subtle, often overlooked dynamics of lived environments. https://annapangalou.net/
Curator: Meg Shiffler
Meg Shiffler is a curator, writer, and educator based in the San Francisco Bay Area and the founder of Cities of Glass, a ten-year independent curatorial initiative commissioning site-responsive work by global artists working across performance, sound, social practice, visual art, and more. Through Cities of Glass, she is exploring how artists can reveal the layered histories, cultures, and lived experiences of cities through projects rooted in place.
Shiffler previously served as Galleries Director and Chief Curator for the San Francisco Arts Commission from 2005 to 2022, where she worked with more than 1,400 artists and developed civic and international contemporary art initiatives. She is currently the inaugural Director of Artist Space Trust, a Community Land Trust dedicated to permanently affordable, community-owned housing and live/work spaces for Bay Area artists. Her writing has appeared in numerous publications, exhibition catalogues, magazines and SFMOMA’s Open Space blog, and she has taught and lectured at institutions including the San Francisco Art Institute and Stanford University.
